(C)Where is Patrick Mahomes from? How Chiefs star became a Mavericks fan growing up

Patrick Mahomes is arguably the best active football player in the world, but his interest isn’t limited to the gridiron.

While Mahomes is the face of the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL, he enjoys plenty of other sports. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise. After all, his father was an MLB pitcher and the younger Mahomes was a three-sport athlete in high school.

But which teams does Mahomes support? He has been very public about his support of most Dallas-area teams; and most recently, he showed off his fandom while sitting courtside at a Mavericks game.

Here’s what to know about Mahomes and the Mavericks — along with the other teams for which the quarterback roots.

Where is Patrick Mahomes from?

Hometown: Tyler, Texas

High school: Whitehouse High School

Mahomes was born and grew up in Tyler, Texas. He attended Whitehouse High School where he was a star, multi-sport athlete.

Mahomes played three sports in high school — football, baseball and basketball — and excelled in all three. The quarterback racked up 4,619 passing yards, 50 passing touchdowns, 948 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns during his senior year of high school to earn a scholarship to Texas Tech.

That said, Mahomes was also considered a top prospect in the 2014 MLB Draft. He could have been selected early if he considered going pro in baseball. Instead, the Tigers selected him in the draft’s 37th round but he opted to play footblal.

Meanwhile, Mahomes’ father thought his son’s best sport was basketball, as Chris Brousard detailed on FS1’s “First Things First,” so perhaps Mahomes could have played for his favorite NBA team had he chosen a different path.

Is Patrick Mahomes a Mavericks fan?

Yes, Mahomes is a Mavericks fan. He grew up a fan of Dallas’ NBA squad — given his proximity to them when Mahomes was younger — and that has carried over even as he has become a star quarterback.

Mahomes frequently posts his thoughts about the Mavericks on social media. In June 2019, he offered an assessment about players Dallas could target on eve of NBA free agency. His preferred targets? Al Horford and Patrick Beverley.

Five years later, he is still posting about them often, as evidenced by his live thoughts during Game 2 of the 2024 Western Conference Finals.

Mahomes has also discussed the Mavericks during media appearances. Most notably, he visited FS1’s “First Things First” ahead of the Mavericks-Timberwolves series and broke down Dallas’ chances of winning an NBA title.

“I think the Mavs have what it takes,” Mahomes said, before adding. “I think if Luka plays the way that Luka can play and Kyrie plays like Kyrie, they have as good a chance as anybody of winning it all.”

Mahomes also acknowledged he was impressed with Derrick Jones Jr.’s defense and P.J. Washington’s all-around game in that appearance, so clearly he is a well-informed and invested fan.

That’s why it would hardly be a surprise to see Mahomes attend another Mavericks game, especially if they get to the NBA Finals. He seemed to enjoy himself greatly at the first one, after all.

Tyler, Texas to Dallas, Texas

Tyler, Texas is 96.6 miles east of Dallas. It takes just under two hours to drive between the two cities, and Dallas is the closest major sports city to Tyler.

Comparatively, Houston is 198.6 miles from Tyler while San Antonio is 309.1 miles away. Thus, it makes sense that Mahomes grew up rooting for the Dallas teams.

Where does Patrick Mahomes live?

Mahomes has several residences, but they are in two main locations. He owns a Kansas City condo that he bought when the Chiefs drafted him but later built his dream house — a mansion in Cass County — just outside the city.

Mahomes lives in these houses during football season. In the offseason, he owns a mansion in Westlake, Texas. That residence is located just west of Dallas and is 129.3 miles from Tyler, so despite moving to Missouri, Mahomes has kept his Texas roots intact.

Patrick Mahomes’ other rooting interests

Mahomes grew up a Cowboys fan, though it’s hard to imagine he has sustained that rooting interest while playing for the Chiefs. He remains a fan of the NHL’s Stars and has followed them closely during their 2024 Stanley Cup Playoff run.

Mahomes has vested interests in a handful of sports teams. He bought a minority stake in MLB’s Royals, and he frequently posts highlights of their performance to his social media accounts. The same can be said of his support of MLS’ Sporting Kansas City’ and the NWSL’s Kansas City Current.

Mahomes also invested in Formula One’s Alpine racing team. He and Travis Kelce are both involved in that venture.

One would presume that gives Mahomes plenty of teams to track and root for when he isn’t on the gridiron. It is, however, worth wondering whether Mahomes pulls for any of his father’s former MLB teams in addition to the Royals. The elder Mahomes played for the Twins, Red Sox, Mets, Rangers, Mets and Pirates during his career.
