Mike Tyson has decided to postpone his highly anticipated wrestling match against Jake Paul following a recent medical diagnosis. The decision came after Tyson, 57, was advised by medical professionals to limit his training due to an ulcer flare-up.
In an official statement released on social media on Friday, May 31, Tyson’s team explained, “During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations. Both Mike and Jake are in agreement that it is only fair to ensure that both athletes have equal training time to prepare for this important match.”
Originally scheduled for July 20, the match will now be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced on June 7. Despite the postponement, the fight will still take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as initially planned.
The decision to delay the match came just five days after Tyson experienced a medical emergency on an American Airlines flight from Miami to Los Angeles on May 26. According to an eyewitness report, Tyson suffered an episode that led to paramedics boarding the plane upon its arrival at LAX. The flight had already been delayed two hours before takeoff due to high temperatures in Miami and another 25 minutes at LAX while paramedics attended to Tyson.
“Thankfully, Mr. Tyson is doing great. He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing,” Tyson’s representative stated to In Touch. “He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him.”
Following the incident, Jake Paul, 27, addressed the situation via X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “You love to make s–t up before knowing the facts for clicks / likes. Nothing changed,” dismissing rumors of a cancellation.
The fight against Jake Paul will mark Tyson’s first return to the ring since his 2020 exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr., which ended in a draw. Tyson, a New York native and legendary boxer, became an undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990 and retired from the sport in 2005.
Despite the age difference, Jake Paul, 30 years younger than Tyson, has expressed his determination not to underestimate his opponent. In an interview with TMZ on May 24, Paul said, “Mike Tyson is a killer. He’s ruthless. He’s the most vicious champion ever. So, I have to channel that Mike Tyson energy to finish him. And the legend must fall.”
