Christina Fulton is speaking out about a “horrific” incident with her son Weston Coppola Cage that ended with him reportedly suspected of battery.

In a statement shared Monday, May 6, the actress, 56, disputed recent reports that she and Weston, 33, argued before an alleged scuffle between them that was first reported by TMZ.

“Weston and I had no argument prior to the incident,” Fulton said in the statement. “On Sunday, April 28, I was reached out to by several of Weston’s best friends for assistance because they were experiencing Weston in a mental-health crisis.”

She went on to say she “acted swiftly to ensure [Weston’s] safety,” adding, “Upon my arrival, I was met by my son who clearly was in a state of a mental-health breakdown, which in turn became a horrific experience.”

Fulton concluded, “I have always supported helping my son with his mental-health struggles. I am doing all I can to get him the continued support he needs.”

Citing law enforcement sources, TMZ reported on May 5 that Weston, whom Fulton shares with ex Nicolas Cage, allegedly got into a verbal scuffle with his mother on April 28 at her home in Los Angeles before the incident allegedly became physical.

The outlet, citing sources, shared that Weston is a suspect in a battery report as a result of the alleged altercation. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that “a battery report was taken.” Sources told TMZ that no arrests have been made.

A rep for Weston has not responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Weston, who has struggled with substance abuse, was arrested for a DUI and a hit and run in Los Angeles back in 2017.

He’d previously opened up about his sobriety journey, telling PEOPLE in 2015, “It got to the point where people thought I was digging my grave.”

The father of four also shared that the birth of his first child helped him focus on his recovery. “Having the combination of [now-ex] Danielle and Lucian and my father in my life, just that trinity right there, basically is going to keep me here,” Weston said at the time.
