Jon Bon Jovi Recalls Wife’s Brutal Honesty During Vocal Issues

In a recent chat with Kerrang!, Jon Bon Jovi opened up about his conversation with his wife, Dorothea Hurley, while having vocal issues.

In spring 2022, Jon wasn’t feeling satisfied. He thought it might be his last chance, so he decided to aim high. He planned to start each show with a capella chorus of ‘Livin’ On A Prayer,’ just like he did at Wembley Stadium in 1995. He was determined to go all out:

“That’s what took me through those 15 shows, that took audacity, that took big balls. You’re supposed to warm up to that. But I went and opened with it, out of desire, out of sheer will, thinking, ‘F*ck it, I’ll power through it.’”

The singer thought after the performance:

“That went okay.”

Still, his wife didn’t agree and said:

“No, it wasn’t.”

Details Of His Vocal Problems

In 2022, the Bon Jovi frontman had surgery on his vocal cords. One cord had shrunk to the size of a thumb, while the other had become very thin. This made singing hard because the stronger cord was too dominant over the weaker one. He previously detailed his vocal injury at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California:

“One of my cords was literally atrophied. So, my vocal cords they’re supposed to look parallel. So let’s pretend one of them looks as thick as my thumb and the other one is as thick as a pinky. So, the strong one was pushing the weak one aside. And I wasn’t singing well. So my craft was being taken from me.”

Jon also discussed how he felt dealing with vocal issues:

“I pride myself on being a true vocalist. I’ve sung with Pavarotti. I know how to sing. I’ve studied the craft for 40 years. I’m not a stylist who just barks and howls. I know how to sing. So when God was taking away my ability, and I couldn’t understand why, I jokingly said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose is my finger. So, there was no reason for this.”

During a recent chat on BBC’s The One Show, the musician mentioned feeling great and even sang some songs in his hotel room. He’s eager to return to live performances.
