John Wick 5: Everything we know so far… wonder corner?

Somehow, John Wick 5 is reportedly in development. That’s right, Baba Yaga may live to fight another day, and we’ve got all the information you need on the John Wick 5 release date, what might happen next, and who would be part of the cast.

John Wick is the franchise that keeps on giving. It seems whenever the titular hero thinks he’s done, there are more bad guys who need an ass-kicking, and he’s more than happy to hand it out.

The series started with a vengeful widower, brought out of bereaved retirement after Russian goons killed his puppy (the last gift from his dead wife, no less) and steal his cherished car. The resulting rampage introduced us to the custom-governed, fascinating world of The Continental and the High Table.

John Wick’s tragic story also kickstarted the Keanussaince, and birthed the best action franchise of the 21st century. The fourth chapter ended on a surprisingly poignant, somber note, but the people want more, so here’s everything we know about John Wick: Chapter 5.

Is John Wick 5 happening?

John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development, with Chad Stahelski currently cooking up a story, but it’s unclear when it’ll ever be released.

John Wick 5LIONSGATE

In an interview last year, Stahelski told Empire Magazine: “I honestly don’t know. Lionsgate is keen on doing more John Wick stuff, understandably. It’s not a bad thing for a director to have a property that they want to make more of. I don’t have a take right now. But I could wake up tomorrow and have a cool idea that I’d pitch to Keanu, or he would pitch to me, and it might hit that chord of, ‘Oh my God, we got to do this right now.’

“Now we’ve done the four, and completed the circle, so to speak, I think it’s pretty good closure for the series,” he continued. “And then there’s the competitor, or the real director in me who goes, ‘F**k it, let’s just see if we can do it.’ It’s very appealing. I just don’t have the ‘why’ yet. But that doesn’t mean we should stop looking.”

Speaking to Inverse in October 2023, Stahelski revealed that he’s now not completely against the idea.

“I have notebooks and notebooks of sh** behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We have ideas for days. We just don’t have the story locked. I have no interest in doing the cash grab of bringing John Wick back for something. Is he a character I like? Of course.

“And if I did a couple of John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story. We leave that open-ended. I know that the studio would love us to say we have another one.”

Franchise producer Basil Iwanyk provided a more promising update in November 2023, teasing to Screen Rant: “If there is another John Wick movie, which I do believe there will be, we don’t know what it is yet, but I do believe.”

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Ian McShane was asked what he thought about the likelihood of a fifth chapter actually happening. “I think Keanu deserves a good rest as long as he wants,” he said.

“I spoke to him the other day, he’s resting for a while after the beating he’s taken over the last 10 years from all the assassins of the world. Let him rest until he decides to rise from his grave once again, or wherever he sleeps, because really, I’m his father, and he’s the vampire. So, I’m Vlad, The Impaler. [Laughs] There’s a whole horror film to be made out of this. Everything can zoom into something else. There’s no rules.”

Is there a John Wick 5 release date?

No, John Wick 5 doesn’t have a release date right now. If we were to put an estimation on it, we reckon we’ll be waiting until 2026 at the earliest for this movie.

Sadly, it is likely that fans will have to wait at least a few more years before they see a mainline John Wick movie back in theatres. After all, the Ana de Armas-led spin-off Ballerina is the next big priority for this universe, and the release of that has been pushed back a year to 2025 for reshoots.

“What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spin-off that comes out [in 2025]. We’re in development on three other [Wick projects], including five and including the television series, The Continental, which will be airing soon,” Lionsgate boss Joe Drake said in May 2023.

John Wick 5LIONSGATE

“We’re building out the world and when that fifth movie comes, it will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

Given these comments, it’s clear that John Wick 5 is on the slate of projects from this world, but it’s also fair to assume that it’ll be released no earlier than 2026. However, we’ll be sure to keep you updated if any more specific release date timelines are revealed.

John Wick 5 cast: Will Keanu Reeves be back for the new movie?

Despite the way chapter four leaves the character, you would assume that John Wick 5 will feature Keanu Reeves in a leading role.

While fans may be excited to hear that John Wick 5 is potentially in the works, this announcement may also bring up some confusion. After all, the end of John Wick 4 made it seem as though the titular hero had finally met his end.

We even saw John Wick’s grave. However, odds are that John Wick 5 will explore the idea of Baba Yaga faking his own death, something that wouldn’t be completely unrealistic for the franchise.

Given this, it seems likely Reeves will return for John Wick 5. As well as this, Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne will likely return as Continental owner Winston and the Bowery King respectively. However, this is all simply rumors and speculation at the time of writing.

As director Stahelski teases to Empire Magazine, “dead” might not be an option for John Wick: “You know, we’ve seen John take worse injuries.”

“I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on never say never. I mean, I wouldn’t do a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski. We’d have to see what that looked like. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace,” Reeves told EW.

There’s always the chance we might see characters (and actors) spill over from The Continental cast, too, but one man who will sadly not be returning is Lance Reddick, who passed away after filming the TV show.

Be sure to check back in with this section as we update it with all the confirmed casting announcements and reveals for John Wick 5.

John Wick 5 plot: What will the movie be about?

If John Wick 5 is to follow any kind of logical path, the story will have to explain just how John is still alive after seemingly dying in the previous instalment.

As we mentioned above, the ending of John Wick 4 makes it appear as though the character has finally met his fate. However, that’s not to say that he can’t come back and find more people to beat up and horses to ride through roads and cities.

However, John Wick director Chad Stahelski does have some ideas of what he wants to see in the new chapter. When talking to Empire, Stahelski said “I could wake up tomorrow and have a cool idea that I’d pitch to Keanu [Reeves], or he would pitch to me, and it might hit that chord of, ‘Oh my God, we got to do this right now.’

“I have scenes, I have action sequences in my head that we haven’t used yet that I’d love to do. If we do come back, we can’t just do the same thing. I gotta do my homework. I gotta get better,” he added.

Producer Basil Iwanyk also added to Screen Rant that when it comes to another movie, “I do feel like it will be a completely other book. If these movies were four chapters, you kind of blame it on the metaphor. The next John Wick will be another book. It won’t be like six months later from John Wick 4.”

Ballerina John Wick spinoff: Release date, cast & more

Ana De Armas

Here’s what we know about Ballerina, the anticipated John Wick spinoff movie, including the release date, cast, plot, and more.

No one could ever imagine how much Keanu Reeves’s John Wick film franchise would take the world by storm when the first time premiered in 2014.

Now, almost five movies and one TV mini series later, it seems like the John Wick universe is getting even bigger as a in-universe film titled Ballerina is slated to premiere soon.

So, here is everything we know about the latter project, titled Ballerina.

Is there a release date for the John Wick spinoff Ballerina?

Ballerina will be released in cinemas on June 6, 2025.

The film was originally slated to release the same time in 2024, however it was recently pushed back a whole year due to reshoots focused on the action sequences of the film.

It was announced earlier this year that the movie would be pushed back again from its release date of June 7 to June 6.

Principal photography officially started for the movie in November 2022 in Prague, before going into post-production in February 2023.

Who’s in the cast for the John Wick spinoff Ballerina?

No Time to Die’s Ana de Armas will star in the titular role of the Ballerina, an assassin trained at the dance school seen in John Wick: Chapter 3.

While much of the rest of the cast is unknown, at least two characters from the John Wick franchise will be returning.

John Wick will appear in Ballerina.

Ian McShane will return to the John Wick universe as Winston, the owner and proprietor of The Continental.

The big news, though, is that Keanu Reeves will appear as John Wick in Ballerina alongside de Armas.

The movie’s co-writer Shay Hatten told Collider that Reeves’ role will be more than a cameo. “We got him to be in it for a good chunk,” he said.

“He’s a real character, and it’s not just kind of a one-piece cameo. He’s got… well, I shouldn’t say too much, but he’s in the movie in a way that I think people are going to be really excited by.”

Lance Reddick was also set to reprise his role as Charon, a concierge at the Continental, but the acclaimed actor sadly passed away in March 2023. It’s currently unknown whether he had already filmed scenes for the movie before his death.

In addition, Anjelica Huston will appear in Ballerina as The Director. Huston’s character first appeared in John Wick: Chapter 3, running the ballet that trained John and will likely be where De Armas’s character is trained.

On December 13, 2022, Deadline reported that The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus would also be joining Ballerina in an unknown role.

Ballerina plot: What’s the John Wick spinoff about?

The preliminary synopsis for Ballerina is as follows: “A young female assassin seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.”

In an interview with Screen Rant, producer Erica Lee described de Armas’ character and how she would fit into the world of John Wick.

Lee said that, while John Wick has spent the last two films trying to get out of the assassin world, “the character that Ana de Armas plays in Ballerina is trying to get in. Just there alone is a different character study. And also, it’s a female perspective. Ana is an amazing actress and brings so much to it. It’s a very different vibe than Keanu, so I think that audiences are really going to be interested in that.”

Is there a Ballerina trailer for the John Wick spinoff?

There has not yet been any sort of official teaser or trailer for Ballerina. We will add these trailers to this space as they become available.

John Wick’s Ian McShane brutally roasts The Continental spinoff as a “cash grab”

John Wick Ian McShane Winston Scott

Ian McShane isn’t a fan of how the John Wick series was spun off with Prime Video’s The Continental, slamming the series as a mere “cash grab” in a recent interview.

What began as a simple tale of a man seeking vengeance for his dog has quickly escalated into one of the hottest properties of the generation. John Wick has now seen four mainline films hit big screens around the globe, but the franchise is only just beginning.

From spinoff shows to spinoff movies, and a fifth entry seemingly inevitable too, there’s plenty more in the works to keep the John Wick name afloat in the coming years. However, it seems not all of these projects are striking a chord with those involved.

Recently, Ian McShane, responsible for bringing Winston Scott to life, revealed he wasn’t consulted on his character’s prequel show The Continental. “They never asked anybody about it,” he claimed. “They just went and did it.”

Now, days after those comments, the acclaimed actor has doubled down in tearing into the Prime Video series, labeling it nothing more than a mere “cash grab.”

The Continental told the story of Winston Duke’s origins in the John Wick universe.

“I wouldn’t watch it,” McShane said in an interview with MovieWeb. “I have no intentions – nobody – I don’t think Keanu [Reeves] watched it, neither has Chad [Stahelski]. It had nothing to do with our movies.”

Evidently not a fan of the show itself nor the motivations behind it, McShane slammed the spinoff as an example of a “company cashing in on the series.”

“They never asked us about anything so why would I be interested in seeing it? I’m afraid their arrogance in getting the show out is beyond me so I wish them well.”

A divisive series, the prequel set in the 1970s told the story of McShane’s character, Winston Scott, and his ascension to authority within The Continental. However, it now seems clear as day the original actor was never asked to share insight with Colin Woodell as he portrayed a younger version.

While The Continental may not have landed quite as series executives hoped, that hasn’t put a stop to future plans. Ballerina, a spinoff film led by Ana De Armas, was just delayed until 2025 so they could get the action scenes just right, in true John Wick fashion.

Beyond that, all signs point to John Wick 5 happening down the line, though there’s no telling for certain how it may come to fruition.

John Wick star reveals he was “never asked” about The Continental

The Continental is a John Wick prequel series that debuted on Prime Video last year. But according to Ian McShane, the stars of the movie were never informed about the making of the show.

Ian McShane plays Winston Scott across all four John Wick movies; longtime friend of the title character, and owner of The Continental, which is a safe haven for assassins.

The John Wick universe has been expanding however, with the movie Ballerina hitting screens next year, and featuring the characters of both Scott and Wick.

While in 2023, The Continental aired on Amazon Prime, a prequel series that was set in the 1970s, and served as something of an origin story for Winston Scott. Unbeknownst to McShane.

John Wick star reveals he was “never asked” about The Continental

Ian McShane appeared on a British talk show last night, where he spoke about Ballerina reshoots, before being asked about The Continental.

The actor’s face drops at the mere mention of the show, with McShane revealing that he’s never watched it, and questioning why he would see it. His reason? “They never asked anybody about it. They just went and did it.”

John Wick Spinoff Ballerina delayed a whole year to work on action scenes

ballerina delayed header

The John Wick spin-off film Ballerina has just been hit with a year-long delay and will now release in 2025.

The John Wick franchise has become one of the most beloved action series of the generation. The main franchise stars Keanu Reeves, the actor portraying the rugged, brutal, and all-business John Wick.

Given the success of the first three movies, it was revealed that multiple spin-off films and TV shows were on the way. The most hotly anticipated of the bunch being Ana De Armas’ Ballerina flick.

The short and sweet synopsis for Ballerina is as follows: “A young female assassin seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.”

However, the film has just been hit with a major delay, Deadline reporting that the spin-off has been delayed a whole year as the project undergoes reshoots that will largely focus on action sequences for the film.

Therefore, rather than releasing on June 6, 2024, Ballerina is now slated for release on June 7, 2025.

So while fans will have to wait an extra year for Ballerina to come out, the hype surrounding the movie is still high. After all, confirmation that the likes of Reeves and other John Wick actors will appear in the film sparked major interest from the fanbase in the lead-up to its release.

However, there is no denying that the film has been through a tumultuous journey when it comes to its development process. Principal photography officially started for the movie in November 2022 in Prague, before going into post-production in February 2023.

The film will consequently have been in post-production for over two years before it does eventually hit big screens worldwide.

Ballerina is now set to open in theatres on June 7, 2025.
