Liam Neeson’s new movie In the Land of Saints and Sinners has landed a strong Rotten Tomatoes score as it’s released on Netflix.

The film sees the action star play Finbar Murphy, a retired assassin who is drawn back into the game due to a trio of terrorists.

The Irish thriller, which was previously released in US cinemas, is available now on Netflix in the UK and Ireland, and looks to be another winner for the Taken star – sitting at 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many reviews have praised In the Land of Saints and Sinners as “a cut above” the average Neeson thriller, though others have criticised some of the more clichéd aspects of the movie.

Here’s what critics have been saying:

Empire

“A solid, old-fashioned Irish Western about what it means to hang up your rifle. It isn’t especially deep, but it’s good to see Liam Neeson find some character depth among the usual shooting and grumbling.”

IndieWire

“In the Land of Saints and Sinners [is] a cut above the average Neeson thriller, even if Neeson himself seems more at peace than ever with being a hired gun.”

Variety

“The feature finds its essential tension in its approach to Neeson’s on-screen image – here, playing a gentle elder embedded in a quiet town, but also unforgettably an actor that has buttered his bread shooting up criminal henchmen for nearly two decades now.”

Screen International

“Neeson looks as strong as ever in the ‘big lad’ role: he’s 71, and signs are that he will just keep on sinning – as long as there is a child in distress.”

The Guardian

“There’s bits and pieces of entertaining stuff here, a few sharp lines and a gonzo final shootout, but the overall tone of cliche is a bit wearing, correctly signalled in the title, which appears to misremember the phrase ‘saints and scholars’.”

The Hollywood Reporter

“The script is awash in clichés and the movie lacking in excitement despite plenty of guns and knives and bombs. The best that can be said about In the Land of Saints & Sinners is that it’s at least cast with Irish actors, so the accents are authentic, if the same can’t be said for much else.”

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is streaming now on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
