An underrated Liam Neeson action flick has proven popular with viewers on Netflix
One of Liam Neeson’s overlooked recent action movies has become a hit with Netflix subscribers. Cold Pursuit was released in 2019 and sees Neeson starring alongside Jurassic Park star Laura Dern.
Cold Pursuit is a remake of the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance. The film sees the Ballymena native playing a snowplow driver who seeks revenge after his son dies at the hands of a drug cartel.
The film also stars Tom Bateman, Tom Jackson, Emmy Rossum, Domenick Lombardozzi, Julia Jones, John Doman. It received mixed reviews when it was released in movie theaters four years ago and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 68 percent.
However, most of the reviews of the Liam Neeson action thriller are generally positive. One reviewer said of the film: “It nails its tone as an offbeat black comedy, managing to balance the macabre and the silly.”
Another wrote: “Cold Pursuit’s streaks of brutal cold humor have more bite than your average dark-comedy.”
During the week of October 23 to October 29, Cold Pursuit was watched for 13.2 million hours. It received a total of 6.7 million and made its way into the global top ten.
The success is somewhat of a surprise as the film was largely overlooked when it was initially released. It made $10.8m in its opening weekend and ended up being one of Liam Neeson’s worst box office openings.
Cold Pursuit isn’t the only Liam Neeson action flick to become a recent Netflix hit years after it was released in movie theaters. Fans recently rediscovered 2014’s Non-Stop, which saw Neeson act alongside Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery, and Lupita Nyong’o.
Non-Stop follows Neeson as a former NYPD police officer and US Air Marshall who turns to alcohol as he mourns the untimely death of his daughter. He is forced to snap back into action in a race against time when the flight he is on is hijacked.
