Arnold Schwarzenegger, the seven-time Mr. Olympia, has shared his insights on muscle recovery in the latest edition of his newsletter, Arnold’s Pump Club.
Known for his deep dive into evidence-based research, Schwarzenegger discusses the role of antioxidants in alleviating muscle soreness after intense workouts.
He highlights a new study that suggests coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) can significantly aid in muscle recovery.
Co-Q10, a naturally occurring enzyme found in the mitochondria of cells, has shown promising results in improving muscle damage markers.
Schwarzenegger stresses that while Co-Q10 supplements can be beneficial, they should not replace natural body processes or proper lifestyle habits such as nutrition, hydration, movement, and sleep.
He advises focusing on these fundamentals first before considering supplementation.
Additionally, he shares dosage recommendations for those who choose to supplement with Co-Q10, suggesting 100 to 300 mg per day to potentially see improvements within twelve weeks.
In a previous discussion, Schwarzenegger also cautioned against the use of NSAIDs like Advil or Motrin for muscle soreness, pointing out that while these medications can reduce discomfort, they may actually slow down the body’s natural healing processes by inhibiting inflammation, which is crucial for recovery.
