For a long while, it looked as though the San Antonio Spurs’ season would be completely lost, with the development of Victor Wembanyama being the only bright side. But lately, the Spurs have been turning things around. They’re putting up a fight against solid teams and taking out some of the fellow bottom-feeders.
They are 3-4 in their last seven games, which doesn’t sound amazing, but considering they’ve only won eight games this season, that’s a serious turnaround. On Saturday night, they picked up a 131-127 win over the Washington Wizards. The Wizards were up by 12 points with five minutes remaining, but the Spurs fought back and took home a win.
When asked about the Spurs’ late-game surge after the victory, Victor Wembanyama said that it all came down to their ability to play as a team.
“Playing as a team again,” Wembanyama said via ESPN. “I think we were slow. I was very slow. My legs were heavy tonight. And getting some stops. We relaxed and I could feel the shift from all my teammates — me included — in the fourth quarter and fortunately, it worked. Everyone was involved.”
Wembanyama finished the game with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and six blocks while shooting 10-of-21 from the floor and 2-of-5 from behind the three-point line.
Jeremy Sochan put up 23 points, Devin Vassell had 21, and Keldon Johnson scored 19 off the bench. Tre Jones also had a solid game, dropping 11 points, eight rebounds, 12 assists, and three steals.
It was a solid, well-rounded performance that gave some insight into what the Spurs could be when they’re at their best.
