Eight-year-old Kevin was far from scared of Harry and Marty, but that wasn’t entirely the case with Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci in Home Alone.
Is it even the holiday season if Home Alone isn’t constantly on repeat on cable television?
The sequel films, except for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, of course, just can’t compare to the nostalgic appeal and hilarious one-liners of the original 1990 Christmas film.
The cult classic Home Alone launched Macaulay Culkin’s film career but was also the start of his long film streak, which eventually led to his brief hiatus from acting.
While it seemed all fun and games for eight-year-old Kevin McCallister to fend off the Wet Bandits named Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marty (Daniel Stern), Culkin didn’t have the same experience with one of the criminals.
Joe Pesci had starred alongside Ray Liotta in Goodfellas the same year Home Alone was released. His terrifying persona even caused Culkin to fear him on set.
Due to his gangster film background, Pesci didn’t have much experience working with children. According to CBC’s Midday, Pesci agreed to star in Home Alone because he enjoyed the script and “wanted to play it for the kids.”
Despite his enthusiasm and generosity towards children, Pesci still managed to frighten Culkin. Although, it was actually an intentional scare tactic.
According to Mental Floss, Pesci purposefully avoided Culkin on the set of Home Alone so the child actor would appear more scared of him when they filmed scenes together.
While Pesci’s method acting may have emotionally scarred Culkin, Pesci took his intense methods one step further in a particular scene that even physically scarred Culkin. When Kevin was hung on a coat hanger, Harry told him he would bite all his fingers off.
Culkin admitted in an interview with Rule Forty Two that Pesci actually broke skin during rehearsals when he bit Culkin. The incident even left him with a permanent scar.
Pesci and Culkin’s relationship must have improved considering their behavior toward one another at social events.
Both Pesci and Stern had trouble refraining from spouting curse words, which was problematic considering the child actors on set.
Pesci reverted to cartoon cursing, like Looney Tunes character Yosemite Sam, to help with this issue. Viewers noticed this technique, especially during the booby trap scenes.
In addition to his potty mouth, Pesci was also particular about call times. According to INSIDEGOLF, Pesci grabbed the assistant director by the collar to demand the start time be changed from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. to accommodate his strict golfing schedule of nine holes each morning.
There was already a time constraint on filming, considering Culkin couldn’t stay past 10 p.m. While Pesci avoided Culkin to enhance their performances, his demanding on-set behavior didn’t land him entirely in the clear.
