Drake lost his title as King of Digital Music to Eminem just nine months later, but the Canadian hitmaker made a major comeback to reclaim it.
Prior to Thursday, December 8, Em held the distinction of being the first rapper to have three Diamond singles in the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) catalog, which indicates that each song has sold 10 million copies in the US. The most recent RIAA statement, which disclosed Drake has numerous certifications linked to some of his best hits, changed that.
Drake became the highest certified single after surpassing Eminem.
Leading the group is “God’s Plan,” released in 2018. With 15 platinum certifications to its name, it is currently the third highest-certified song in RIAA digital history. As of this writing, the only songs with higher certifications are “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “Sunflower” by Post Malone & Swae Lee. In other news, Drizzy added two new Diamond singles to his RIAA total, “Hotline Bling” (2015) and “One Dance” (2016), making him the second-ever emcee to get three such trophies.
Only the following musicians can claim to have as many or more Diamond certifications: Em (3), Maroon 5 (3), Katy Perry (3), Ed Sheeran (3), Imagine Dragons (4), The Weeknd (4), Post Malone (4), and Bruno Mars (5).
