‘I did not want to win that award’: Iggy Azalea reveals she was RELIEVED to be beaten out by Eminem for rap Grammy… even after his controversial lyrics about her
Iggy Azalea hasn’t got the best relationship with Eminem, speaking out against the legendary rapper’s lyrics about her late last year.
But she’s still relieved that he nabbed the Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards, telling Power 106 ‘I did not want to win that award.’
The 33-year-old explained ‘people already hate me enough. I do not need to be hated any more.’
Bullet doged: Iggy Azalea recently revealed that she was happy to not win Rap Album Of The Year at the Grammy Awards, saying that her snagging of the award would have caused more trouble for her
‘My speech would have been like, “f*** this. I don’t want it, take it. Get it away from me,’ Iggy exclaimed.
Her role in hip hop was put under the magnifying glass late last year after Azealia Banks claimed Iggy was ignorant about black issues.
Popular rapper J. Cole exacerbated discussions with his song Fire Squad, wherein he raps: ‘white people have snatched the sound… watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile.’
‘I found it to be kind of ironic,’ the Fancy hitmaker says in response.
‘It was because I’m white, therefore I’m appropriating culture, but then Eminem won it… they didn’t seem to say anything about that. I suspect it was just because they dislike me.’
Double standards: Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP II would take the award. Iggy pointed out the irony of his winning not being a problem but if she were to win she would be ‘appropriating culture’
Her The New Classic album was beat out by 51-year-old Marshall ‘Eminem’ Mathers’ Marshall Mathers LP II.
In addition to enjoying greater critical acclaim, MMLPII has sold over 2.2million copies in the US since it’s November 2013 release, compared to The New Classic’s sales of around 500,000 since last April.
The two were at odds late last year when in December Eminem’s Vegas track, which featured the following lyrics, leaked.
‘So what’s it gon’ be? Put that shit away, Iggy. You don’t wanna blow that rape whistle on me. Scream! I love it.’
She then Tweeted ‘I’m bored of the old men threatening young women as entertainment trend’ and ‘my 14 year old brother is the biggest eminem fan and now the artist he admired says he wants to rape me. nice!’
No love lost: The two were at odds late last year after he rapped about raping Iggy in one of his songs, with the Fancy hitmaker responding that she’s tired of the ‘old men threatening young women as entertainment trend’
