UFC superstar Conor McGregor has backed Dustin Poirier to get the job done against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Poirier is set to take on Makhachev for his third shot at the lightweight title on June 2.
Ahead of the fight, Poirier emerged as an underdog, with Makhachev the favorite to win the bout. However, as one would assume, ‘Diamond’ is confident in his abilities and has claimed that he will knock out Makhachev.
Surprisingly, he was recently backed by his former rival Conor McGregor. During a recent live stream, McGregor was asked to predict Poirier vs Makhachev. To which he replied by saying:
“I think Dustin does him, knocks him out. I think the things that Makhachev does wrong, the things he’s not good at, he fumbles over his feet usually early and falls into shots.”
“[Islam’s] been knocked out by a back check hook from a southpaw before… and that’s one of Dustin’s best shots. If Dustin’s ever gonna do it, it’ll be this time…”, he added.
Will Dustin Poirier Fight Conor McGregor Again?
Dustin Poirier has shrugged off the idea of a fourth fight against Conor McGregor. Poirier and McGregor have been two of the best rivals in the UFC.
The two have fought each other three times. In their first fight, McGregor emerged victorious. However, Poirier won the next two fights.
“I think that ship has sailed. All I want is the UFC lightweight championship. I don’t feel the need to fight [Conor] again at all. I don’t need that [bad] energy in my life”, Poirier said.
That said, it remains to be seen what lies ahead of both fighters following their respective fights.
