Young Thug may have spent the last two years behind bars as the alleged shot-caller of what prosecutors have called a “criminal street gang,” but T.I. is confident that the charges won’t hold up in court.
Appearing on The Breakfast Club earlier this week, Tip discussed the ongoing RICO trial against Thug and his YSL collective, outlining why he believes his “All About the Money” collaborator will beat the case and come home.
“He’s coming home,” he said matter-of-factly. “I don’t think that the prosecution has successfully proven the case of him knowingly and willingly participating in an active street gang. I just don’t see it.
“I don’t think that the witnesses that they’ve called thus far have proven what they’ve said that they would prove. I just don’t think that the grounds of that case have been presented properly. I just ain’t seen it.”
T.I., who is no stranger to legal trouble himself, also said he would take care of Thug if he’s released from jail.
“Don’t worry, we’re gonna get him right, we’re gonna take care of him,” he said. “He’s gonna be just fine. It’s already in the bag. All he gotta do is touch down.”
Fellow Young Thug collaborator Rich Homie Quan was recently summoned to testify in the RICO trial.
According to social media user ThuggerDaily, the Atlanta rapper has been served a summons to take the witness stand in the lengthy and high-profile trial.
The same account also claimed that Quan previously gave a police statement that will be read in court.
Quan will not necessarily provide evidence against Thug during his appearance on the witness stand, though.
Lil Wayne may also be called to testify in the trial after Fulton County prosecutors tried to play videos of the rapper speaking about Thug in the courtroom, but Judge Ural Glanville refused to allow it unless Wayne testified himself.
The issue relates to the 2015 shooting of Wayne’s tour bus which the prosecution claim Thug was behind.
They allege he hired affiliate PeeWee Roscoe to carry out the attack. Roscoe was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 years of probation over the matter, but his conviction was overturned in 2018.
There were originally over 700 named witnesses put forward by the state, but now only around 200 could be called to take part in the trial.
Gunna’s name was removed from the revised witness list, as was Thug’s brother Unfoonk, who was previously sentenced to over nine years in prison.
Birdman and YFN Lucci could also still be called to testify as they remain on the government’s witness list.
